19 Mind-Blowing Space Facts That Will Make You See The Universe Differently

1. With a temperature of 475 degrees Celsius, Venus is actually the hottest planet in our solar system.

Even though it isn't closest to the sun, the atmosphere around Venus traps heat in, and makes the surface WAY hotter.

2. The sun makes up for more than 99 percent of the mass of the solar system.

Apparently, the sun weighs about 3,32,830 kg!

3. There are more trees on Earth than stars in space.

Compared to three trillion trees on Earth, there are only about 100-400 billion stars in space. WOW!

4. If you're on Mars, the sunset you see will be blue.

The dust on the red planet enhances the blue parts of the light of the sun, and, when the sun sets, the visuals from Mars make it look blue.

5. There's an Earth-like planet called 55 Cancri e, which is made of diamonds.

Research suggests that the reason we can't see that is because all those diamonds are covered in lava. Aww damn!

6. Footprints of astronauts, or rover prints, will stay on the moon's surface for at least 100 million years.

Seems like forever, doesn't it?

7. Similar metals can weld together on their own, when in space.

It’s called cold welding.

8. There are more than 23,000 objects orbiting the earth that count as "space junk".

These include things like broken rocket parts and dead satellites, and are extremely dangerous if they're part of a collision course.

9. The International Space Station (ISS) is actually as big as a football field.

The whole ISS measures 357 feet, end-to-end.

10. Uranus is the ONLY planet that rotates sideways.

The planet is on a 97.7 degree tilt, probably thanks to a collision, and its orbit is at a right angle to its equator.

11. Jupiter has a moon, Io, that is the most volcanically active moon in the whole solar system.

The surface has hundreds of volcanoes that erupt dozens of kilometres in height.

12. We've sent spacecrafts to every single planet, including a dwarf planet like Ceres!

Between 1957 and 2015, spacecrafts have flown past or been around every single planet from Mercury to Pluto.

13. Mercury is actually shrinking!

The planet has been contracting since its creation, 4.5 billion years ago, and the smallest planet in our solar system is only getting smaller.

14. Winds on Neptune blow at 2,400 km/hour.

For context? The fastest winds on Earth blow at about 400 km/hour.

15. Space suits are expensive! A full NASA space suit can cost between $15-22 million.

And that was the price quoted in 1974. So today, it would be between $83-122 million, adjusted to inflation. YIKES!

16. The moon is round? No! It's lemon-shaped.

Turns out, the tidal tug of the Earth has actually distorted the shape of the moon, and it's not round, as we see it.

17. Space doesn't just have black holes. We also have white holes!

An opposite to their dark twins, white holes actually give out light and matter, instead of trapping it in.

18. The sun loses about 5 million kilograms per second, only in energy.

...but the sun is so big that it can keep burning for another 4 billion years. So, we're good!

19. Venus actually spins in the opposite direction to other planets.

The theory is, Venus still spins the right way, but it was probably flipped on its axis by 180 degrees, thanks to an asteroid collision.
